Iran’s magnesium deposits are produced to varying degrees mainly in eastern Iran. More than 70 percent of Iran’s magnesium is produced in South Khorasan in the Sarbisheh and Nehbandan counties and the rest is mainly supplied by mines in Sistan and Baluchistan province. The eastern magnesium deposits of Iran are formed along the Nehbandan fault and on or near the ophiolitic units. These deposits occur in veins, streaks, and layers.
Iran’s magnesium mines are capable of producing 300,000 magnesiums of different purity annually, more than 70% of which is used in the refractory industry.
Magnesite with the formula MgCO3 is known to be the most important and valuable mineral of magnesium. The mineral crystallizes as a member of the carbonate group in the trigonal system, the Scalenoidric class. It is rarely seen in the crystalline form and is rhombohedral if formed. It is commonly found with minerals Hondite, Hydromannite and Chromite. Its chemical composition is 47.8% magnesium oxide and 52.2% carbon dioxide.
